Brian,

Welcome to LTSP! You have captured the essence of this wonderful place, the community it is a part of, and the world in which we serve. God's abundant blessings as you continue through seminary and enter the world and answer your call.
- John

I am excited for you. I remember my first days of seminary...I was SO excited to be there. But would you believe, my very first class was Beginning Greek? What a way to start!

Keep posting...I'm excited to hear of your experiences!

Interesting stuff is going on with me. Maybe even going back to being a pastor. I'll let you know what happens. I know I haven't emailed yet like I said I would...but it will come!

I agree with Chris, but would add that most pastoral care comes when your mouth is closed and your ears are open. I think the Holy Spirit does its best work then.

I am sure these aren't your "first" pastoral care moments. You've probably ministered to people time and time again without those moments being officially labeled as "pastoral care". You...caring about people...and showing people love...that is what pastoral care is all about! I have a feeling that you really have nothing to worry about!

Living up to the social expectations of a pastor...wow...I know that one well. For the 14 years that I was a pastor, I constantly struggled with that. And because of that struggle, I kept a lot of things to myself. I didn't want people to know the struggles I had. I didn't want to let them down. I felt that I had to be "spiritual enough" to earn their respect. The last 6 years of my pastoral ministry was a process of my shedding the pastoral guise that I had worn and trying to integrate the real me into my ministry. It was tough. I felt more and more free during those final 6 years, but I still struggled with living up to what I thought were everyone's expectations. I suspect it is something every pastor deals with. But like you said, it is all about dependence on Christ. Be yourself and be dependent on him. You'll have a tremendous ministry as you allow people to see the real you!

GREAT post! I appreciate your application of coming out of the darkness to so many different areas of life...excellent!

Trusting God's provision for those who are in ministry is probably one of the first hurdles that God asks us to leap over as we enter ministry. I had the same fear...it is normal...probably everyone who enters ministry has that concern. You're not alone. And the great thing is that God DOES provide. My 14 years as a pastor were amazing as God provided time and time again. He doesn't always provide for our WANTS but he always provides for our NEEDS!
